Blue and green

When I was little, we used to always say “blue and green should never be seen, except in the washing machine”. We later added “and at camp” because at camp, anything goes! Funny how fashion rules change. Blue and green are great together.

Today, I wore an outfit inspired by Zooey Deschanel. Who else, right?

blueandgreen

I really like the way it turned out, and I think my students did too, because they kept commenting on it. Some of the girls will comment sometimes, but today, it was ongoing throughout the day. The kids’ comments are usually positive, and always brutally honest. For example, last week, one of my first graders said “Your hair looks nice when it’s all tangled.” Umm, thanks.

This is a sample of what I heard today:

You’re pretty.

Last time you wore that dress, you didn’t wear blue.

It’s like an outfit, because your shoes are blue, your belt is blue and you sweater is blue.

Your dress is green, but that’s ok.

I’ve seen those shoes before.

I like your small sweater.

IMG_6183

The little girls comment much more than the boys. I’m not sure if it’s because they don’t notice, or they don’t particularly care. I think it’s a mix of both. Some things will always stay the same! To be fair, last week one six year old boy said “Wow! That’s a nice scarf!” He’s the same kid who once told me I looked like a ladybug, so I think he notices some stuff.

I had the dress, the shoes and the sweater for this outfit, I was just missing a belt, so I decided to make one. I made it while watching New Girl. I know, perfect, right?

IMG_6168

It was pretty simple. Lots of tutorials I looked at mentioned sewing hooks or snaps to close the belt. You could do that, or you could do what I did, which is use safety pins. Much easier!

bowbelt

I’m not usually a big fan of belts. I can’t remember the last time I wore a belt that actually had a purpose, they’re mostly just decorative. I’ll put one on in the morning, because it looks cute, but after I get to work, it feels like it starts to tighten around me like a boa constrictor. I then yank it off and throw it in my bag. By the end of the week, I have a collection in there. This belt, however, lasted the whole day.

I really like this dress. I’ve only worn it once before (without any blue, like one student pointed out). It has a nice detail in the back. Today, it wasn’t very warm, so I kept my sweater on and no one really saw the back. Well, there was an intense 15 minutes where I was trying to punch out a million butterflies out of scrapbook paper to make mother’s day cards in the class this afternoon, and my heart rate went up because the stupid punch wasn’t punching and I had to put a lot of effort into it and I got really hot and took my sweater off.

IMG_6187

I think blue and green work really well together, don’t you?

What would Zooey Deschanel wear?

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not very good at fashion. I like what I like (mostly dresses), so I wear a lot of the same kind of outfits. I like bright colours and sparkle, but sometimes, putting together an interesting outfit can be challenging. It’s one of the reasons I wear so many dresses. You put it on, and voilà! you’re done.

I like Zooey Deschanel’s style, and recently discovered What would Zooey Deschanel wear? It’s a website with outfits she wears, both in real life and on her tv show, New Girl. Now, I can’t afford all of the exact same pieces, but I decided to try to recreate some of my favourite looks.

First up (actually, only outfit so far) is a mint green dress with yellow cardigan. I wouldn’t have dared to put these colours together, but it looks great and very appropriate for spring. My pieces were a little different, but I’m going for inspiration here, not copycat-ing.

zooey inspiration

On New Girl, Zooey’s character Jess is a teacher, like me. I decided to recreate this pose too, although I opted not to stand on my desk!

This last picture isn’t actually that great, but I wanted to include at least one photo that had my shoes in it!

IMG_6156

What do you think? Am I channeling Zooey Deschanel / Jess Day?

I heart dresses!

I’m always impressed by fashion bloggers. They can take one dress and wear it 14 different ways. They can make jeans look fancy and an evening gown look casual. I’m not particularly fashion-y.  Fashion seems like a lot of work. You have to know what colours are “in” and what 80’s looks are good and which are bad (to me they’re all bad. It’s a been there, done that kind of thing.) You will never catch me wearing anything with a peplum, but I understand that’s fashionable. Or it was, maybe it isn’t anymore. See? So much work.

I think I’ve created my personal style, but everyone does that, whether we want to or not. What you wear becomes your style. I tend to favour dresses. I love them for several reasons. Here is a list, because I like lists.

Reasons dresses are awesome

1. They make me feel pretty.

2. It’s only one piece of clothing to choose and put on.

3. Jeans (and most pants) hate me.

When I put together an outfit I love, I will wear it that way over and over again. I will wait at least two weeks before wearing it again, but if it was awesome when I wore it, why would I change it up?

Since Valentine’s day was on Friday, and I have several dresses that could have worked, I decided to do a theme week. Nothing too out there with flashing heart headbands and ribbons or anything, just Valentine’s day inspired dresses.

Day 1

I love this dress (Obviously. I love all my dresses.) One of my students told me I should have saved it for Valentine’s day, so I told her my plan. Of course, she thought it was brilliant.

valentine's day 1

Day 2

While I don’t have one favourite dress, this one is always described as “one of my favourites”. Also, hearts. Love.

IMG_5659

Day 3

This was an “I’m sick and I do not want to get up and put on clothes and talk to people” day. I wasn’t feeling great about this look, it felt unfinished (maybe it’s my inner fashionista trying to get out). When I got to school, one of the six year old boys in my class said “Wow! You’re so pretty. You look like a ladybug.” Who needs high fashion when you’re compared to the loveliest insect in the world?

IMG_5661

Day 4

This is an awful photo. I actually hate it when people write that, because if it’s such a bad picture, then why did you post it? In my case, it’s the only one I had as I was still sick and in no mood to take pictures. I set the camera lower than usual so my tights would be in the picture since they’re the star here, but it’s got a weird “I’m looking you up and down” vibe to it. Oh well, pretty tights, comfy dress.

Day 5

My official Valentine’s day dress! I actually ordered this dress in November to wear on Christmas eve, but I only received it in January. I didn’t think it would be so shiny, which makes it more or less appropriate for work, but whatever. It’s pretty and that’s all that matters.

Valentine's day

If you look at my Dressember post, you will notice that most of these dresses have been worn in the exact same way before. Like I said, why mess with a good thing?

And now, for your viewing pleasure, some dress bloopers. Because we all love it when other people look funny.

Well, the zoom works.

A vision of happiness

I haven’t been blogging very much lately, and I’m not sure why. I still love to write. When I do fun stuff (aerial yoga, anyone?) I think “I’ll totally blog about this!” And then, for some reason, I don’t. I’m not about to stress over this and try to analyse it. My blog is, as I’ve said before, my happy place.

So, although this seems a little late, I’ve put together my happy moments for November. In 2014, I am going to try to recap the great moments of every month, because looking back at what made me happy over the course of the month makes me happy all over again, and happy twice is better than happy once!

Christmas crafting with my best friend!

017

Finding homes for my teacups and teapots. I love the mix of tea and books!

tea and books

Displaying my love of tea for all to see! I stained these wooden letters with tea (of course!) and put them in my kitchen window.

073

My birthday is in November, therefore it is the best month of the year.

My birthday dress!

074

Messages from my students on the board in the classroom. I was not allowed to erase them (not that I wanted too!) so I taught using pieces of paper all day. It was worth it!

004

005

006

This was the snack table for my party. Yay, cupcakes! More food was added to this later.

078

I had a vision board party. We looked at many, many magazines, pulling out any and everything that caught our attention.

079

We made a mess, but it was fun!

080

The finished products were fantastic! They are all very different and represent what we want to happen in our lives.

091

Sadly, many magazines were harmed in the making of these vision boards. However, it was for a good cause and they were just going to be recycled anyways!

093

The day after my birthday, there was a huge snowstorm. It was the first snow of the year and it was fabulous! We got about 30cm (I think) and it was perfect snowman snow, the kind that sticks. Since we knew the kids at school would be too excited to sit down and work, we decided to have a special, one hour recess first thing in the morning. Everyone was happy, kids and teachers alike!

I’ve actually enjoyed going through all these moments that happened over a month ago. Maybe I am meant to do these monthly recaps long after they’ve happened!

Dressing up

Now that it’s January, I haven’t been wearing dresses every day, as Dressember is over! As much as I enjoy wearing a dress every day, it was nice to have a little break, because it was so, so cold!

Here is the rest of my December in dresses.

Day 21

I love this dress, but I don’t wear it very often, because it’s not a great colour for me. Maybe I should wear it more in the summertime, when I look a little less pale.

IMG_5392

Day 22

I believe it was snowing and I wasn’t going anywhere, so I opted for a comfortable sweater dress and leggings. Dress is from Old Navy.

IMG_5398

Day 23

I changed the colour of my hair. I love my hair dark. I wanted a picture outside, but it was cold!

Day 24

I had ordered a dress from Modcloth specially for Christmas eve, but it still hasn’t come! Thankfully, I had a lovely back-up dress!

Day 26

Day after Christmas poker game. I didn’t win!

Day 28

This dress is basically a very long sweatshirt. It’s like wearing pajamas all day!

Day 29

A book and lattes kind of day.

Day 30

I’m almost out of days in December, but not out of dresses!

Day 31

Happy New Year!

And here is a look at all of my dresses for the month. 32 dresses in 31 days! Until next year!

Playing dress up

I’ve been wearing dresses all month, because December is Dressember! Now, while this is surely much easier for people who live in a warmer climate, I’m enjoying myself. There were a few very, very cold days where I had to add several layers over my dresses and tights before I could go outside, but it’s worth it.

Here’s a recap of the last couple of weeks or so. For the first part of the month, head on over here.

Day 10 – My Minnie Mouse look.

day 10

Day 11 – My birthday dress! I bought this dress from Modcloth and wore it for the first time on my birthday in November.

IMG_5255

Day 12 – A photo in my classroom before the students showed up. The only calm moment of the day!

IMG_5260

Day 13 – My first pair of coloured tights. I wasn’t sure the look would suit me, but I like it!

day 13

Day 14 – It was so cold, but I wanted a picture outside!

IMG_5296

Day 15 – A little photo shoot in the snow!

day 15

Day 16 – Purple for Monday!

IMG_5340

Day 16 – I’ve had this dress for years, but last year, when I did Dressember, it was a little too tight! I’m very happy it fits properly again.

IMG_5348

Day 18 – Another dress I’ve had for a while. I’m loving how Dressember is making me rediscover some of my dresses!

IMG_5352

Day 19 – Two looks for the 19th, a day look and an evening look.

IMG_5365IMG_5368

Day 20 – Some sparkle for Christmas brunch!

All I want to do is wear pretty dresses

Last year, in December, I took part in Dressember. It’s a fantastic, amazing, fun, challenge where one wears a dress every day in December. It was my first year participating, but I found a great online community of Dressemberites who made it even more fun! Some of the people have been doing it for a few years.

This year, however, there was a twist in the December world. The person who started the challenge in 2009 decided to align Dressember with a charity. She chose the International Justice mission, which is great. What’s not great is that someone is claiming ownership of a word, a challenge, and a community. Our old Dressember facebook page was deleted and we had to change the name of our group. Lots of people donate and fundraise, but for various causes.

Even though I’m apparently not supposed to use the word anymore, it’s still Dressember to me!

Day 1 – Movie, bookstore and lattes, just like day 1 last year (different dress!)

IMG_4691

Day 2 – On Mondays we wear purple! (Some days have themes or colours. It’s just for fun, you don’t have to do it.)

015

Day 3 – Max Studio dress. These dresses always fit me and look awesome, so I have to be sure I’m ready to buy before I try!

003

Day 4 – On Wednesdays we wear pink! Hand me down dress from my mama.

003

Day 5 – Hardtail leggings (my favourite) and dress from a friend who bought it, then decided she didn’t like it.

IMG_5107

Day 6 – BeBop dress. One of my favourites. I bought it in the summer, and thought I’d have to put it away for winter, but it “winterizes” very nicely.

IMG_5123

Day 7 – Purple silk party dress from Kensie. From a friend who didn’t want it anymore. Lucky me!

IMG_5132

Day 8  – Comfortable dress for making cookies all day.

Day 9 – Purple Monday, this time with flowers.

It’s not too late to join in the fun!

Midsummer madness

If you read my blog last December, you know that I participated in Dressember, which is the amazing challenge of wearing a dress every day for a month. I loved it! The only thing I didn’t like was that I couldn’t show off my most summery dresses. There’s a Dressember facebook page and it was suggested that we do a mini-Dressember in June so we could show off our summer dresses. I posted a few pictures, but here is the whole week.

Day 1

I love, love, love this dress. I love it so much I kind of wrote it a love letter.

002

Day 2

It was a rainy, grey day so I tried to wear as much colour as I could to balance it out!

010

Day 3

A dress I’ve had for years. I’ve never worn it with blue shoes before.

002

Day 4

My red dress. Probably one of my favourites.

004

Day 5

I don’t wear a lot of yellow, because it washes me out and people ask me if I’m feeling ok, but this is a light, sunny yellow, so it’s good.

003

Day 6

I had another dress picked out, but I overslept and ran out the door in 10 minutes. No time to iron, do my hair or my makeup. At least I still wore a dress. Also, I made it to work on time!

001

Day 7

It was very cold and it was raining, so I had to cover most of my dress up. I took two pictures: how I wanted to wear my dress, and how I actually wore it.

day 7

I didn’t wear a dress today, but I’ve still got plenty. If I can remember to take pictures, I’ll share!

How to survive a core flow class

I don’t have a very strong core. I have strong legs and arms, but not my core. That’s ok, because I can work on it and get stronger. The thing is, I don’t like working on my core. I don’t like planks and dolphin push ups and a million boat poses. I don’t need a six pack. The other thing, however, is that I really, really want to do a headstand, a handstand, a forearm stand, and any other inversion. You need a strong core for that.

I’m on day 5 of my 30 day yoga challenge, and the only class I could fit it yesterday, on day 4, was a core flow class. I usually avoid this class, although I love the teacher (hi Amber!). I go to her other classes, but not this one. Except for yesterday. I thought I would put together a helpful little list for anyone who might not know what they’re getting into.

1. Don’t go.

2. See step one.

3. Ok fine. If you’re going, don’t take it too seriously.

4. Ask the teacher to go easy on the core work.

5. When the teacher says “Take it easy, you don’t want to tire yourself out in the first 10 minutes”, listen to her! Also, don’t yell out “What?! It’s only been 10 minutes?!”

6. Do dolphin pose. Do one dolphin pose push up to see what it feels like. Forever avoid dolphin pushups.

7. When you do side plank on your forearm, you can’t adjust your arm without falling down, it’s kind of holding you up. Not that I fell or anything.

8. During the 24 minute plank pose, just hang out on your mat like you’re at the beach and tell yourself everyone is so busy not passing out that nobody will notice.

9. After class, don’t ask your teacher if she noticed you wimped out on most of the poses, because when she says she didn’t notice, you can’t really laugh and say “Haha, just kidding, I did it all!” She won’t believe you.

10. Your abs will hurt the next day when you laugh, even if you only did a third of the planks (that’s still like 32).

11. Go out for dinner with your girlfriends to reward yourself for all your hard work.

Today I went to yin, because there was no way I was doing a power class! I think tomorrow might be a yin-day as well.

I’ve been wearing dresses for my week long dress challenge too. It’s so much easier to wear dresses than to do a core class!

Day 4                                                            Day 5

004  003

Sunday girl

I’ve recently become obsessed with Zooey Deschanel. Ok, maybe not obsessed, but that girl has some serious style! Not to mention talent as well. Let’s just say she influenced part of this post, which is all about dresses, books and yoga. How fabulous is that combination?

Dresses

Earlier in the week, I posted a teaser of a dress I bought. I originally saw it at Winners, but they didn’t have it in my size, so I went to another Winners. Again, no luck. It was perfect, but I was resigned to not having it. Then, I went to Marshall’s with my friend Suzanne and she said “Look at this pretty dress.” It was my dress! And in my size! It was fate I tell you, fate.

The very same day, I saw a cd at Starbucks from a duo called She and Him. It was Zooey Deschanel and a guy (I’m sorry, I don’t remember his name.). I didn’t even know she sang. When I got home, I looked it up. Not only does she sing, she writes her own songs. Plus, my new dress could totally be in her video for I could have been your girl.

I’ve been listening to the cd all week. I love it!

Back in December, I participated in Dressember, which was a challenge to wear a dress every day for the whole month. The Dressember creator decided to have a summer challenge so we could show off our pretty summer dresses. It’s only for a week this time, but I was super excited to wear my new dress in a Zooey-inspired style!

002

009

010

012

That was day one of the dress challenge. Today was day two and it was very grey and gloomy this morning, so I went with bright colours to balance it out.

I’ve already got my dress picked out for tomorrow!

Books

Today was one of my favourite book-related days of the year. The library book fair! Woohoo! (I know. I’m a nerd.) They sell old books and you pay by weight. I didn’t actually notice what the price per kilogram was, but it wasn’t very much. There were a lot of people and it was muggy in there, so I didn’t stay very long, but I was so happy I got to go!

018

They also sell really, really old books. Last year, I bought a 100 year old book for my sister for 50 cents. No such luck this year though.

020

I got some great stuff for me and for my classroom. I got eight books for the kids and it cost me 12$. You can barely get one book for that price! They’re all in really good shape too. I got four books for myself and it cost me 5$ Not quite as amazing as the 25 cent books I got last week, but still a good price for someone who buys more books than, well, than anything else really!

015

Yoga

Today was day two of my 30 day yoga challenge. I usually go to yoga on Sunday morning, not afternoon, but today I was busy with the books, so I went to a beginner class in the afternoon. It’s nice to take an intro class every now and then. You really get into the foundation of the poses and you don’t just flow through them. It’s not as easy as you would expect because we get used to moving to a certain rythm and when you break a pose down into pieces, it takes more focus to get into it.

It was a good thing I didn’t go to a power class because I had a headache and every time I put my head down in downward dog, it hurt more. I think it’s my fault. I didn’t drink enough water today. Oops!

After class, I got my sticker! The girls made a sticker board where all the challengers can track their progress. It might seem silly, but getting that sticker is a great motivation!

021

So that was my day as a Sunday girl, which is the title of one of the songs off She and Him, Volume 3. Here’s the video that inspired my look. I would have loved a crinoline and a bow, but I didn’t have either. I’ll definitely find a bow for next time I wear my dress!
